Surface Preparation & Coating

KCS Protective Coating provides services for surface preparation and protective coating application for various type of steel plates, steel bar and pipes, storage tanks, and any steel structure that require such services. Our philosophy in corrosion prevention is to use precision-controlled process and effective action plan to protect the structural surfaces of our client's assets and investments.

BEFORE BLASTING

1

Inspection of Steelwork

  • Condition of rust - Grades A, B, C, D
  • Oil or grease - solvent wipe in accordance with SSPC - SP1
  • Sharp edges, weld slag - grind off

Inspection of Abrasive

  • Grade/mesh size
  • Salt free and general utility

Inspection of Blasting Equipment

  • Test run for equipment
  • Compressed air free from oil and moisture-trap and separator
  • Pressure at blast hose nozzle - hyperdermix needle (85 - G20)
  • No defective on blasting nozzle

DURING BLASTING

2

Measure & Record Weather Condition

  • Measure and record weather condition - dew point, relative humidity, steel surface temperature. No blasting should be allowed if steel temperature is less than 3 ℃ above dew point

Inspection of Surface Preparation

  • Standard achieved - visual comparison using pictorial standard SIS 05-5900-1967 Class SA 2½ (SSPC - SP10)
  • Surface roughness of minimum 30 micron as measured by profile gauge

AFTER BLASTING

3

Check Weather Condition

  • No coating to be applied if steel temperature is less than 3 ℃ dew point

Inspection of Blasted Surface

  • Sharp edges to be removed by sanding down
  • Dust free surface - to blow off dust
  • Dust/pollution free environment. No painting to be applied when blasting work is being carried out nearby

Paint Application

  • Within 4 hours

APPLICATION/ INSPECTION SEQUENCE

4

Inspect Spray Equipment

  • Clean equipment/material hose/spray gun (worn nozzle to be replaced).
  • Filter mesh size; clean air/free from oil moisture

Apply 1st Coat

  • Within 4 hours after blasting
  • Preferable relative humidity below 85% and steel surface temperature should be minimum 3 ℃ above dew point
  • Continuity of film build in a wet coat
  • Do not mix more than can be used
  • Do not spray coatings while blasting is underway in surrounding areas
  • Check for dry film thickness using Dry Film Thickness Gauge

Application of Subsequent Coat

  • Subsequent coat to be applied within the maximum overcoating time of first coat (only if applicable)

Note:

  1. No blasting to be allowed if relative humidity is above 85% (Whirling Hygrometer) to be or steel surface temperature (using Magnetic Contact Thermometer) less than 3 ℃ above dew point (using Dew Point Calculator)
  2. Blasted steels surface should be primed within 4 hours at normal weather condition provided that no abrupt change in weather condition and tool surface (rust blooming)
  3. Blasted surface left uncoated overnight shall receive a complete light blasting the next day before priming
